Planning a Food Drive

Steps to ensure success:

1.

Select a coordinator or a coordinating committee.

2.

Establish a goal for the amount of food.

3.

Create publicity utilizing newsletters, memos, E-Mails, bulletins, flyers, posters, payroll inserts, etc.

4.

Be specific in terms of the "most needed food items".

5.

Be creative in your planning. For example, select a theme such as “Christmas in April”; identify theme days such as “Macaroni Monday”; or request a food donation as admission to a special event.

6.

Encourage competition between departments or multiple sites.

7.

Locate decorated receptacles in a visible and heavily traveled areas.

8.

Provide decorated bags for participants to return with donated items.

9.

Provide regular reminders and progress reports regarding the food drive.

10.

Publicize the results of the food drive, acknowledging those most responsible for its success.

Request matching contributions of food, supplies, or money from your employer.
